Goalkeeper Samik Mitra Scores Historic Goal as Chennaiyin FC Hold Dempo 1-1 in Super Cup Thriller

PNS Bureau:- A moment of brilliance from goalkeeper Samik Mitra created history on Friday as Chennaiyin FC battled to a 1-1 draw against Dempo Sporting Club in their final AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 group fixture at the GMC Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.

Mitra became the first goalkeeper in Chennaiyin FC’s history to score from open play in a competitive match — a feat achieved with a sensational long-range strike from inside his own box that stunned both sets of players and fans alike.

A Historic Equaliser from the Back

After Dempo took the lead in the 25th minute via a well-taken free kick, Chennaiyin responded just five minutes later with Mitra’s incredible goal. Spotting the Dempo goalkeeper off his line, Mitra launched a powerful clearance that bounced over the defence and into the net — an extraordinary moment that will be remembered as one of the most iconic goals in the club’s history.

Chennaiyin Dominate Play

Head coach Clifford Miranda made five changes to the side, handing returns to Mitra and Klusner Pereira, while Kingslee Fernandes and Lalrinliana Hnamte anchored midfield. Vivek S and Maheson Singh supported Irfan Yadwad in attack as Chennaiyin pressed high and dictated the early tempo.

Kingslee and Vivek both came close to scoring in the opening minutes, while Klusner’s deflected shot narrowly missed the target. Despite their dominance, the Marina Machans were punished on a set piece — only for Mitra’s wonder strike to bring them level before halftime.

All-Indian Side Shows Spirit

After the break, Chennaiyin continued to press forward with confidence. Miranda’s substitutions added pace and control as Irfan Yadwad and Gurkirat Singh came close to finding a winner. Klusner’s late corner nearly delivered the decisive goal, but Irfan’s last-minute touch rolled just wide of the post.

Though the game ended 1-1, the result capped a spirited performance and a memorable campaign finale for Chennaiyin FC’s all-Indian squad.

Coach Clifford Miranda on the Result

Speaking after the match, head coach Clifford Miranda praised the team’s resilience and Mitra’s historic goal:

“It’s a moment that defines our fighting spirit. Samik’s goal shows the kind of belief and energy this group has. We may not have progressed, but the boys have given their all and made history in the process.”
